Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Jean-Marie Brussin raced under the name Mary. At LeMans 1958 at Saturday dawn, "Mary" lost control of his car on the wet road at the Dunlop Curve, the first bend immediately after the pits, and crashed into the embankment, being thrown out of the cockpit. As the car slammed back to the roadway and overturned it fell in the path of the Ferrari 250 Testarossa #18 of Bruce Kessler-Dan Gurney, driven by the first, which "Mary" had just overtaken on the finish line straight. Approaching at close to 160 km/h, Bruce Kessler of Los Angeles who was running in 5th place, hit debris of the Jaguar ending up against the outside bank. His Ferrari was destroyed by fire, he flung himself from the seat and sustained extensive burns. "Mary" was killed almost instantly.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

During the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, 5th round of the 1972 European Touring-car Championship held on 22/23 July 1972, the Mazda Savanna RX-3 #64 of Swiss team Walter Brun-Joe Kretschi, driven by Brun crashed at Masta straight at 05h13 on Sunday 23 July 1972 early morning, killing a marshal who was standing in front of the guardrail, with his back to the track. The marshal Léon Grisard was inspecting the track after another competing car had left oil on the asphalt. He was violently hit by the car and killed instantly; Walter Brun escaped uninjured.

At the moment of the accident there was a fog bank in the area, and Walter Brun was closely following another car. It is believed that he wasn't able to realize the marshal was on track and to avoid him. After the accident the event wasn't stopped and Hans Joachim Stuck-Jochen Mass in a factory Ford Capri RS 2600 eventually won the race.

Future Formula One stars Jochen Mass and Hans Joachim-Stuck claimed victory in 1972 in their bulletproof Ford Capri, fending off the mighty Schnitzer BMWs to lead a Ford 1-2-3. But once again, in the darkness and thick fog lay tragedy. At around 5am, as Mass clambered aboard the Capri and was about to head out onto the circuit, Stuck leaned into the car and told his team-mate: “Look out for body parts at the Masta Kink.” Assuming Stuck was referring to bits of cars’ bodywork lying on the circuit, Mass was shocked to discover the true meaning of his team-mate’s warning – the actual body of marshal Léon Grisard was still lying prostrate on the track, having just been hit by the Mazda of Walter Brun.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Sure would be nice to hear from some of the initial posters here, but thanks to the efforts of everyone we've managed to create a niche thread with all the right sentiments towards brave men & women.

There's still some odd ones out there, Depailler video, a Chris Bristow pic that may or may not actually be his car in mid-accident for just 2 examples.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Im positive that you see it

Its horrible to even think about that kind of trauma, even though he died instantly I still cant shake the thought of Smiley feeling it at all, even if it was for only a millisecond

For other members who are having trouble seeing it, look for the different color shade where the top of his head was scalped

Thats what helped me find it years ago
Many thanks for the awesome posts!

Here are more smiley's I believe that have not been posted here

The remains of Jim Clarks Lotus 33 after his crash during the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch in 1965. After just becoming the first driver ever to lap Brands at 100 mph (1min 35.4 sec) he went off while leading the race.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Some pictures of Rolf Stommelen's massive crash during the Spanish GP of 1975 at the Montjuich Park street circuit in Barcelona.

Rolf was leading an incident packed race in his Embassy - Hill- Lola when on lap 26 his rear wing broke and the car flew onto and over the barriers fatally injuring five spectators and the driver suffering a broken leg, a broken wrist and cracked ribs.

Rolf would make a full recovery but sadly lose his life in an IMSA Camel GT crash in 1983.
From page 225

Hopefully some new photos of Rolf's huge crash at the Spanish GP 1975.
