Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
my understanding is that nelson's injuries were to his extremities - his feet (particularly the left heel bone that was turned to power) and the his lower legs i haven't seen any pics of the external frame around his upper legs, just his lower legs :) |

Today's Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta reminded of this 1995 incident... One driver was in a coma Monday and a second underwent eight hours of surgery in the after math of a violent accident at Road Atlanta in Sunday's International Motor Sports Association Grand Prix. Fabrizio Barbazza was unconscious in stable but critical condition at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center Monday, suffering from swelling in the brain, a severely broken arm, a punctured lung and a wound in his leg. His race team owner, Antonio Ferrari, said Barbazza would remain unconscious under sedative for at least 72 hours Jeremy Dale remained in critical but stable condition after surgery to repair what were described as "complex orthopedic injuries" to his lower legs and feet at Georgia Baptist Medical Center. A separate team of surgeons under Dr. John Harper worked on each limb. The doctors consulted with Dr. Terry Trammell of Indianapolis, a specialist in such procedures because of his experience with drivers injured at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Dale is expected to be moved to the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis once his injuries are stabilized. A third driver injured in a separate incident, Steve Millen, remained in intensive care with fractures in his skull and neck at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Barbazza's Ferrari had spun out and was resting sideways on the track's front straight when Dale's Porsche slammed into the side of his car, shearing it in half. Ferrari and Dale's team owner, Harry Brix, were critical of the track's safety efforts, but Road Atlanta's medical co-ordinator, Maureen Evans, pointed to the fact all three drivers were delivered to medical facilities without further complications. "We do this every day for our jobs and we've been doing it for years at Road Atlanta, "she said of the track's trauma units. |

Lets try not to link to Youtube videos, as they get removed very often. Youtube doesn't allow this type of content.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I saw the clip prior to it's removal, clearly a fatal - highside thrown into a chain fence, helmet off, obvious trauma and the reaction of the other riders was clear. There's plenty of clips that are worth seeking though, a track blocking crash in GT and the final 2 laps of the F3 race provide plenty of spills & thrills right up to the end. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Unknown user on Reddit kindly posted this extract from Will Power's book regarding the Vegas Indycar tragedy. Before the accident: "Dario and I didn't agree about much in those days, but I remember us in a press conference before the race where we were supposed to be talking about the championship fight, and we couldn't even play psychological games with each other by pretending we were excited. There was none of this, 'Yeah, this is gonna be great!' to put the other one under pressure. I remember just sitting there thinking, 'Christ, all that effort racing each other all year has come down to this lottery for lunatics." "I dropped back a few laps in because I figured it was a long race, and I could see some crazy movements up ahead, and I didn't want to be a part of that. Dan went around the outside of me and I saw him make up a few more places. Then I saw a puff of smoke and I thought, 'Shit, someone's going to crash,' but acuttally it was people just touching wheels. And there were other people moving around like maniacs because, like I say, we were so glued a driver could get away with anything." "Then on Lap 11, I saw another puff - that was between Cunningham and Hinchcliffe - so I cracked the throttle, but then there was nothing for a moment, because Cunningham took a while to lose it. But when he went up the track, suddenly there was a lot more smoke. JR Hildebrand got up on someone who'd backed off a lot, and suddenly the smoke multiplied and cars started going everywhere. It just kept getting worse and worse and worse. I was behind Alex Lloyd but I could see most of the spinning cars were at the top of the track, and then gradually coming back down the banking after hitting the wall. So I'm getting back on the throttle to duck low and escape the carnage, but Lloyd must have seen Wheldon and EJ Viso getting together so he lifted and I hit his rear wheel and just took off." Will Power's insight on the crash that killed Dan Wheldon: "I remember thinking, I'm going to the catchfence,' which of course is your worst nightmare but then while the car was flying in the air, the rear touched down on the banked pavement and I landed on top of hildebrand's car, As I was coming to a stop, a car slid me backwards and stopped beside me with my nose facing the right-hand side of the cockpit. All the crashed cars stopped moving and there beside me but facing me was a driver with his visor hanging off his helmet and it was obvious his helmet had hit something solid. His eyes were open but the look on his face and damage done...." If you think how lucky we'd been so many times with those pack races, to then have half the field crash out at 220 mph, the odds were against us. I could tell the hard landing had fractured my back because I now knew the feeling, but I was thinking, 'Someone's died, and all I know is that it isn't me.' "Then Paul Tracey came over to me and said, 'Your car's on fire, get out!'.... "Then we got in the Medical Car, and I was yelling - partly in pain, partly in anger over this stupid race. PT was saying, I know, man, I know, but just calm down." "Then in the Medical Center it was just terrible because Dan was brought in on the gurney, and there was blood pooling on the floor so I deliberately turned away to avoid it. I was just looking at Paul but he could see past me and he said, 'Shit, don't turn, you don't want to see that,' and he was right. The image of Dan's face as we sat beside each other on track was enough and it will stay with me forever". Alleged on the thread is that the TV crew did have a camera showing all the detail based on it's location down the backstretch, it's surmised that the feed from the in-car camera was also captured and clearly showed the impact into the fence. :( |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I was there for the Weldon crash. It was pretty far away so we only saw cars going everywhere, some flipping and fire. I had binoculars and could see they were all around one car but I couldnt tell who. Pippa was seen on the video screen crying and her car ended up right next to Weldon's. Don't know if it was from her badly broken finger or what she saw. Eventually they said it was Weldon they were working on. I figured he was dead from the reactions I could see in the pit lane. People crying and hugging I never saw that before at an auto race in the pits. When they covered up the car it was certain. My friends watching in Enland and Scotland said that's when they knew too.
