Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Been a while since I popped in here, wondering if some of our clever sleuths might fancy a little project. It seems there's a collection of pictures on Instagram around the Spa 1960 race, 1 in particular caught my eye as it's noted as "bristow" and shows a grainy image of an out of control car clearly somersaulting with what might be a body lying on the track. Looking at the trajectory of the corner, it fits Burnenville as well. In other words, identical to what we know of the basic circumstances of the crash. As that picture hasn't appeared here, I'm wondering if there is in fact something else out there. Might be a wild goose chase, but if we drag up such a rare find it will be worth it. TD. |

Well, crap! I'm at the end. Thank you to all of the contributors for creating such an outstanding thread. I haven't thought this much about auto racing since my father-in-law passed away in 2000. I hated the sport for years after losing him. He was a pioneer in the drag racing world but at one point or another was involved in just about every kind of motor sport you can imagine (cars, boats, motorcycles, etc.). You've managed to rekindle an old passion and for that I'm very grateful. |

The talented young rookie entered the Burnenville corner on Lap 19 of the race lying in 6th place battling with Wolfgang Von Trips & Willy Mareisse. He lost control of his car and crashed heavily, rolling several times. The Cooper struck an embankment and Bristow was thrown through barbed wire that fenced the meadow he was entering. He was decapitated. Due to the crash occuring on the inside of the turn, Bristow’s body ended up thrown back onto the track. Fellow rookie Jim Clark witnessed the horrific aftermath of the crash and forever disliked the Spa Francorchamps circuit for the remainder of his life. http://formula1.markwessel.com//imag...is-bristow.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vU-m2T31R_...el_bristow.jpg https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...-delia-spa.jpg |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
You can shatter every bone you have and they can regrow and arrange them to fill in. Billy Monger was missing a few other pieces. Shredded muscles, severed arteries, obliterated nerves, etc. Lots of things that are - at best - if fixed, cause extreme pain for life (which, given he was 17, would hopefully be a long, long time) and at worst, just nothing to reuse at all. My broken ankle got a new, different reconstruction surgery to save it from a painful fusion, and that was just from deterioration, not major injury. The bones were unusable. There isn't even a long-term prognosis because ankles with deteriorated bone and cartilage traditionally just can't be fixed. The alternative (and generally used method) is painful fusion, with a likely amputation in 15-20 years because of it being a static joint, that the only option after that point, when the nerves finally get whacked, is just to hack it off. In some cases, complete amputation is a better option than attempts at reconstruction, even if the reconstruction would "save" a leg. Also, just 3 months later, he got back into a(n altered) racecar. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news...onger-10736507 Now, he's WALKING. https://twitter.com/BBCSurrey/status/914236608664219649 Tough kid. |
