Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Danica Patrick (of all people) actually did it at turn one one year on her first qualifying lap. The inside the car camera view literally left everybody gasping. Juan Montoya did it once early in his career. Those are the only two times I have seen anybody catch the rear end that was way out of shape at Indy by turning right and then fast left again to get it back in line.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Alboreto same corner '91. His head came so close to hitting the wall.
as ridiculous as this might seem, i have always been under the impression that nelson hit his head on the wall (or hit it very hard on something). to my understanding his helmet was cactus and he suffered severe concussion

looking at nelson's, gerhard's, michele's and even riccardo patrese's accidents there, it still seems so unbelievable that an accident as innocuous as senna's was the fatal one

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

I think that's part of what made it so sad. If it wasn't for the whole build up of doom over that weekend you'd have expected him to just step out, dust himself down and walk back to the pits looking a bit contemplative.

Re loose driving at Indy, I seem to remember a great interview with Jerry Grant in the immediate aftermath of Swede Savage's accident in '73. Something like "..you don't want to be driving em sideways.."

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

It was reported that a rear halfshaft broke on Danny Ongias's car as he was exiting turn 3.
There was no way he wasn't going to hit the wall.

According to Dr. Steve Olvey in his book Rapid Response, Ongias's right leg had a large gaping wound with leg bone protruding from the open fracture when Olvey arrived at the destroyed car with both of Ongias's legs hideously exposed where the front of the car was supposed to be.

During surgery to try and save Ongias's right leg Dr. Terry Trammel discovered a large chunk of his tibia was missing concurrent with a hole torn in the right leg of his triple layer driving suit. The next day a member of the racetracks clean-up crew found the missing piece of bone. It had been ejected through his drivers suit.
Dr. Trammel was able to save the leg but the ejected piece of bone was not found in time to be put back in Ongias's leg. So after surgery his right leg was about an inch shorter than before the crash.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

The Mosport race track 1971 and a Formula Ford race prior to the Grand Prix.

Early on there had been an incident and an ambulance was brought onto the track without the race being stopped and 37 year old Wayne Kelly attempted to take fourth place touched the car and crashed into the back of the ambulance and was de-capitated.
Brutal photo of the wreckage coming to rest.

He lost grip on the RHS tires and spun a little, when they regained traction again he was facing directly at the wall..
