Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Riccardo's main injuries and that would sadly lead to his death were massive chest injuries. He also had leg injuries but due to the fire retardant racing suit any burns were relatively minor....

I forgot that I had this next photo...an upsetting image of Riccardo's mother who was at the track to watch her son and saw the accident unfold...

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Two times F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso was very lucky to walk away from this huge crash at the opening race of this years season in Australia when he collided with Gutierrez’s Haas. “We risk our lives every time we get in a Formula One car. These things happen, but I’m extremely happy to be okay. The reason I’m still alive is probably thanks to all the fantastic work the FIA has done over the past 10 or 15 years to improve safety, work they continue to do.” |

Original post from page 113. A few more from Helmut Niedermayr's horrific crash at the Grenzlandring 1952. The first photo shows Helmut losing it, just prior to leaving the road and killing 13 spectators. |

Original post from page 184. A very clear set of photos, including two colour images, of Roger's March moments after hitting the barrier which collapsed turning the car over and leading to Williams death... |

My friend was at Watkins Glen that day at that corner of the Koinigg crash. He said they but a sheet over the body and the race continued.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Every account of the Koinigg crash says the same, I think a marshal picked up the helmet to find the head in it. Williamson had a sheet thrown over his body and the car was transported back to the paddock at the end of the race with him still in it, having tried to put the fire out by throwing sand on it once the extinguisher Purley used ran out. Pretty sure Piers Courage was left in his car till the end of 1970 Dutch GP as well. I think the general thing then was something along the lines of "well another one dead, on with the race we go!" Different times, brave men. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I've made it to page 141 of this thread of awesome. I saw a post linking to "Grand Prix: The Killer Years" on Vimeo which has been deleted. I have a recording of this excellent documentary which was on BBC Four awhile back. There is another version on the Speed channel which is edited and shorter. Here is the BBC version split into 4 sections so they can be posted here for prosperity and our enjoyment so ENJOY! Many wrecks and deaths are shown from the 1960s and 1970s including Wolfgang von Trips, Lorenzo Bandini (he actually died a few days later), Jim Clark, Jo Schlesser, Jochen Rindt, and Roger Williamson. |
