Mauri Rose thumps the wall at Indy in '46 but gets away with it.

Henry Taylor lost control of his Lotus Climax in the rain at the 1961 British Grand Prix at Aintree. He mowed down a sign and rode along a wooded wall which puntured the fuel tank, causing a fire. The fire was put out but they could not get him out of the car because rescuers had no tools. He had suffered minor burns and cracked ribs. The race continued, no safety cars in thoise days. Eventually they got him out and he laid in the rain beside the track with the cars wizzing by for 17 minutes before an ambulance finally arrived. This is how racing used to be.

After he passes Al Sr. with 3 laps to go he opens it up and leaves everybody in the dust. Amazing finish to an amazing 500 for all involved, sans Roger Penske dumb ass

He didn't crash head-on into a wall but nonetheless, that was still brutal and horrific. After the crash, I'm looking at this guy moving around and I can't believe he's alive. I'm waiting for the next scene that shows the guy walking on fucking water.

Awesome job, and thanks for the effort and time you put into uploading these hi-rez pictures. Stunning, spectacular, brutal, and mesmerizing while staring at a split second moment in time where that person is staring at death. I've seen Grand Prix live in Long Beach and here in Houston Texas and video does not do justice to speed these drive reach. People just don't know or understand the amount of skill it takes to maneuver a car at 200 mile per hour.

Andy Granatelli crashed in practice for the 1948 Indianapolis 500. It was the end of his driving career. He went on to be a promoter, car owner, and sponser. His attempts to win the 500 with the Novis and Turbine cars were spectacular legendary failures. But he finally did win it with Mario Andrettin in 1969 and Gordon Johncock in 1973. He was a tireless hukster for STP, racing, and himself. He was a pain in the ass to everybody and at the same time endlessly entertaining. We need more like him today. But by the way, nobody called him "Mr 500."

Jean-Luc Magnier and his brother Jean-Marc, who was his co-driver, went off the road during the Mont Kemmel special stage of the 24 Heures d'Ypres, then a round of the European Rally Championship for Drivers. Their yellow painted Alpine Renault A110 hit a stone bridge and both of them were ejected from the car through the windscreen. They were taken to Yeres hospital in critical condition.

Jean-Luc Magnier did not survive his injuries. The accident occurred on Sunday, 27 June 1976. It is believed a tyre failure caused the car going out of control. Magnier was at the wheel of the former team Défense Mondiale Alpine Renault which had been driven by Claude Ballot-Léna in the 1973 Rallye de Monte-Carlo.
