Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I remember seeing it when the race was shown on Wide World of Sports or something. It wasn't a live broadcast. They never showed a replay and it was a long shot from turn 2. They didn't have replays or many in 1970. Something broke on the back stretch and he turned left into the infield. The car dug into the grass and started a series of side over side flips, could have been as many as 10. I never saw a photo before. I don't recall he was hurt, or hurt bad anyway.

Gordon johncock looking pretty unhappy trapped in his wrecked car. Thought it might be Michigan '84 but aluminium chassis (and hairstyles) suggests sometime earlier?

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
On September 28, 1958, Jimmy Reece was killed during a USAC Champ Car race held at Trenton Speedway. On the first turn of the last lap, Reece's inside wheels got into the dirt next to the concrete track, causing his car to change its direction and run up an embankment. After bursting through a two-foot wooden fence on the edge of the track, the Kurtis 500G spiraled through the air and smashed down on a hurricane fence, having ejected Reece, who died of multiple injuries in an ambulance.

That looks horrendous. Thought those old roadsters were built like tanks, you've really got to go some to snap one in half.

Here's Nelson Piquet having a big shunt at Silverstone in 81 after a rear tyre let go. He fractured a bone in his leg but recovered to take the title.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
i have a family friend who drove sprint cars in the 50s and early 60s,i wasnt born until '62 so i never saw him run,he was racing somewhere in the mid-west at a state fairgrounds,he was hit by another car and climbed the fence, went airborne, then hit a barn just outside the track,he had traumatic head injuries,he speaks as if he is mentally retarded now,but is sharp as a tac still, hes in his 80s ,he also lost an arm and had some nasty internal injuries, but he now owns a fleet of water trucks and water tenders and uses them for wildland fires as contract tenders for calfire.
