Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

When they were first testing this current DW12 car in 2011 (I think), it had huge handling issues and the quick fix was to add ballast to the nose. Before they started to race this car, it got a new much lighter gearbox which also cured the same handling issue by fixing the weight distribution. It is not clear (to me) if they managed to remove the nose ballast or not because of the fixed gearbox.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Lap 49 of the 1961 Indy 500, Don Davis spins in his own oil on the mainstretch, and slams into the barrier. Dazed, Davis stumbles from his car as speeding racecars dodged every direction, trying to miss him. Six cars wrecked, with Jack Turner flipping end over end, soaring over Lloyd Ruby’s Autolite Dealers’ car.
A new to thread pic of Jack Turner's epic '61 flip. Luck is a very precious commodity in a racing car.

Fatso Phillips was killed in October 1967 in a figure 8 race at Zebulon Speedway in Georgia. He was hit in the drivers door. The side bar of the roll cage broke loose and went into his side, braking several ribs. Two went through his heart and both lungs killing him instantly.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Benoît Musy was killed on October 7, 1956 when his Maserati flew over the top of the high banked turn at Monthléry France. The banking had no guard rail at the top. The car literally became airborne at 150 MPH, crashing 110 yards further and plunging 59 ft below on the back side of the bank. On its way down, the car nicked the wall of a small building and then was thrown onto a parked transport truck. The car bounced a second time, and its driver was ejected from his seat and was crushed on the ground. This banking still exists today but when the track is used they have chicanes to keep cars low and slow on the banking.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

March 23 1930 at the American Legion Speedway in L.A., 23 yr old local driver Kenny Stoddard is left fatally injured after being ejected from his American Special. He died in hospital a day later from a fractured skull and internal injuries. Shorty Cantlon was also involved, collecting Stoddards flipped car, but escaped unharmed. He was to die at Indy in 1947 again avoiding someone else's accident.

Waldo Barnett was leading the Sprint Car race at the Valley County Fair in Ord, Nebraska in August 1947 when he looked back to see who was following, brushed the wall, and flipped. He died on the way to the hospital.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

In 1989, Grant Adcox became the first Winston Cup series driver to perish from race injuries since Terry Schoonover in 1984.Ironically, both drivers were injured at the same track, Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Sometimes I don't always watch NASCAR clips for the wrecks on this post. Sometimes I watch so I can hear Bob, Benny and Ned.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Another shot of Mel Kenyons "well there go my legs" moment at Indy in 71. He said that was his thought as he saw Johncock spin towards him. Note the track worker sat on the wall to the right.
