Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I had seen that F5000 crash, but didn't manage to match it to any real crash until now. Awesome era....

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Ivor Bueb suffered serious injuries in 1959 when he crashed his BRP Cooper-Borgward Formula Two car at the Charade Circuit near Clermont-Ferrand, France. He crashed at Gravenoire, a multiple apex-section at the very far end of the circuit, and was thrown out of his Cooper. He died six days later at a hospital near the circuit. Notice the ace 1959 rescue technique.

Thoughts are with Justin Wilson today, seriously injured when he was struck on the head by debris at the Pocono race. Clips are on the usual sources, this looks more of a Henry Surtees situation than a Felipe Massa. Ominous silence from everywhere reminiscent of the dreadful Las Vegas race. Hoping for good news because Justin is by all accounts a decent guy. Such a dampener on what was a fantastic race, at one stage they were 7 wide, yes SEVEN.... at 200mph. Unbelievable. |

Anyone know if the Indycar driver helmets have that reinforcing plate which was added to F1 helmets after Massa's accident? Be strong, Justin. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Yes, they do. "Bell Racing USA, for example, supplies helmets to 13 of the 33 drivers in this year's Indy 500... ...Bell then delivers them to its drivers; IndyCar verifies each one is certified under the FIA's 8860 “super helmet” standard, and is fitted with an extra layer of protection in the form of a visor-reinforcing panel of Zylon, like the one that helped protect James Hinchcliffe when debris struck his head during the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. As far as installing radio- and drink-system equipment, Bell leaves that up to the teams. Bell's new HP7 helmet used at Indy -- and which took a year to develop -- is the same design as some F1 drivers used already last year; Bell during its development relocated the visor forward and down so that its pivot points moved lower to allow integration of the Zylon panel. Added benefits of the visor's revised location include more side protection during impacts, and better aero performance because the visor sits more flush in the shell, producing less ambient noise." As for Wilson, it doesn't look good for a total recovery. From the sounds of it, he is on bypass of some sort as his brain isn't telling his organs to work (via the press conference last night, that his brain "isn't communicating with his body". Indycar just tweeted about 40 minutes ago that there is no change - still in a coma, still unresponsive. Usually (but not always), updates to famous persons medical status is "medically induced coma", if it's not a result of the trauma, but rather a necessary step to heal properly. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
RIP Justin. A point that may be of interest is that a comment I've seen on another forum indicates that the nose cone section of the DW12 chassis was loaded with ballast to cure an inherent instability. As a consequence the estimated weight of the part that Wilson hit was somewhere near 10kg or more, given he was doing probably in the region of 140mph when he hit (all numbers estimates) you can see the physical forces he had to endure. Failing that, simply seeing the height the part flew, and how it flew - it clearly wasn't a small, light piece either- told people it was bad. People have commented the initial impression was his body posture reminded them of Ratzenberger, sadly the end result is the same. For years the UK has enjoyed success in USA, now they've lost Wheldon & Wilson, Franchitti survived his huge crash & so did Conway. Not exactly star-crossed recently. However, this was a freak accident and while not entirely preventable, you have to balance the idea of safety with some acceptance you can never remove all danger. This isn't & never will be a Las Vegas situation. |
