Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

The mention of Derek Warwick discussing Donnelly's crash is more poignant if you know that the following season his younger brother Paul had a virtually identical crash in F3000 at Oulton Park.

Over time there hasn't been a single picture released of the crash, it's alleged they were purchased by the Warwick family. Apparently it was a very nasty crash of extreme violence.
Yesterday was the 24th anniversary (unbelievable really) of Paul Warwick's crash, in browsing the net I came across this picture for "sale" which is new to me and apparently this forum. It seems to show an aftermath where the unfortunate driver is being tended to over the tire barrier.

The reports I've read all tally with that being where he was thrown to so it's likely he's not moved and shows the violence of the crash.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

This is the only photo I've ever seen of the Chris Lambert F2 crash at Zandvoort 1968.

An article from 'Speedworld' magazine describes the incident,
“Although a lap behind the whole field to start with Regazzoni was blazing a trail through the rear of the field and came up to overtake Lambert as they approached the right-hander over the East Bridge. He tried to take the Englishman on the inside but the cars touched and Lambert shot off the track into the guard rail. Unfortunately some straw bales had been placed in front of the rail and these naturally compressed into a ramp and Lambert's car went over the top and dived onto the pedestrian path below. Lambert was killed instantly along with a woman spectator. Regazzoni's car was inverted, but the driver crawled out almost unscathed.”

This is a piece from the excellent Motorsport Memorial site,

'On the tenth lap Regazzoni, driving a Tecno, tried to overtake Lambert at Tunnel Oost, a fast right-hander at the back of the circuit where an underground pass allows spectators to enter the infield of the track. Lambert lined himself up on the left side of the road; as Regazzoni tried to overtake him on the inside, the Tecno’s front left wheel touched the Brabham’s left rear as the two cars were traveling in excess of 200 km/h. Lambert’s car jolted to the left, clipped the concrete corner of the bridge and careered down the escarpment onto the road beneath. It appears that Chris Lambert was not wearing seat belts and was partially thrown out of the car in the accident. He was dead even before being transported to hospital. Regazzoni crashed further up the road, rolling over several times; fortunately, Regazzoni escaped unscathed.'

There's not many photos of the aftermath of poor Chris Lambert's fatal F2 crash and my original post had a couple of ropey ones, this is by far the best quality image I've seen.

A horrible image and a great post, certainly looks to be the aftermath of Paul's crash....very sad.
Also tragic news of the death of Bianchi...

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Jo was 40 years of age when he got his first chance in Grand Prix Racing. He was a well respected sportcar and F2 driver and when Honda France decided to debut their brand new air-cooled RA302 at the 1968 French GP at Rouen he was the obvious 'home' driver to hire.

Lead Honda driver John Surtees was unhappy about this as he felt the car was under developed and not ready for racing.

In the opening laps of the race in pouring rain the car crashed into an earth bank, and rode high up it rolling down and bursting into flames. The fire burnt uncontrollably and by the time he was pulled clear and laid onto the track by the wrecked car, Schlesser was a burnt husk.

There were also a number of spectators on top of the banking that were burnt. Eyewitness stated that they had heard Jo's engine cut out and this was the reason for his loss of control. Also I have read that spectators had seen Jo half out of the car (no belts in 1968) as the car went up the bank. It seems very likely that he was dead on impact and thankfully not burnt to death in the terrible inferno.

Schlesser's wife and young daughter were at the race and for some time did not know the fate of their loved one, wether he was alive or dead, or even what hospital he had been taken to....
Original post from page 46.

This new to the post photo appears to have been taken soon after Jo's Honda had landed upside down and shows that the driver had been fully ejected from the car. You can see his body lying along side, his head still with the open face helmet by the wheel on the right hand side.

Schlesser would appear to have been crushed to death by his car and marshal's were unable to drag his corpse clear of the intense fire until after he was burnt to a husk.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Possibly new to thread pic of the aftermath of Cevert at the Glen. The faint tyre marks bottom left show how quickly the car was stopped and the state of the barrier is obvious.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Indy car racing is BORING when 1 car get the lead and the rest just follow the leader. F1 is the worse for follow the leader. Indycar need to tighten up the on the start and on restarts too..the start 2 by 2 for 3 rows then its all single file....that should be called off and restarted the right way
