Australian Paul Hawkins became the second (and to date last) F1 driver to go swimming in Monaco harbour in 1965 while racing a privately entered Lotus 33.

Paul took part in three GP's and was a very well respected Sportcar driver, winning the 1967 Targa Florio and the Monza 1000km in 1968.

He would sadly perish in a fiery crash at Oulton Park in 1969 after hitting a tree while driving a Lola T70.

I looked the race on the sofa, was very tired from work and sleept in.
Suddenly i woke up and just in these seconds Senna crashed into the wall.
I will never forget this day!

Hayanari Shimoda's crash during the A1 Grand Prix series at Eastern Creek 2005. He was lucky to escape with only concussion after a huge impact in which the engine was separated from the chassis after going off into a sandtrap and flipping.

Gerhard Berger's fiery crash at the San Marino GP at Imola 1989 when after some kind of failure the Ferrari 640 V12 went off at the Tamburello and burst into flames. The fire-marshalls were on the scene in seconds and Gerhard who had been knocked unconscious in the impact was rescued from the car suffering with burns, mainly to his hands. He only missed one GP before returning.

This crash showed just how safety had improved over the years.

Gerhard took part in 210 GP's winning ten races over an eleven year period. He was also succesful in F3, Sportcars and Touring cars.

Wire pic of the '61 "5 car mishap". I can't imagine what must have been going thro Ruby's head at this point. I remember an interview with Jackie Stewert where he said he was introduced to seat belts at Indy. Anyone know when that started and how?
