Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

An interesting pictorial explaination of the tragically fatal Ignazio Giunti crash during the 1971 1000 km Buenos Aires. His Ferrari 312PB crashed into the rear of the Matra 660 of Jean-Pierre Beltoise, who was pushing his car back to the pits.

Ignazio started in touring car and sportcar racing during the late '60's, finishing second in the Targa Florio and fourth at Le Mans in 1968. He signed for the Ferrari team in 1970 winning the Sebring 12hrs and the Targa Florio and making his F1 debut for the team at the Belguim GP finishing 4th.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

The remains of Jack Middelburg's Honda RS500 after his fatal crash during a road race at Tolbert in Holland on the 3rd April 1984, which was part of the Netherlands National RR Championship.

Jack fell from his machine on the second lap of the race while dicing for the lead and hit a lamp post before being hit by a number of riders that were unable to miss his prone body, his crash helmet was ripped from his head. He died two days later of head injuries.

Middelburg won two 500cc World Championship races, the Dutch TT in 1980 and the British GP in '81, always riding private machinery.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Brian Redman's Cooper T86B front suspension breaks, (last picture) at high speed at the Belgium GP at the fearsome Spa circuit in 1968.

The Cooper flew off the road into a car park and spectator area, hitting a parked vehicle and catching fire. Redman suffered a nasty compound fracture to his right arm and didn't race in F1 again until 1970.

Redman said, "I was at going at 150 mph in top gear when a front wishbone broke on my Cooper-BRM. The results were disturbing to say the least, the car hitting the barrier and rolling over it, leaving me with a compound fracture of both bones in the right forearm"
Original post from page 57.

These photos have been posted previously but not of this size and quality.

They show clearly how lucky Redman was when his Cooper left the track and ended up in a car park.

Brian was a very successful sportcar driver and started 12 GP's, scoring 8 points with a best result of 3rd at the Spanish GP in 1968 his second ever F1 race and the one before this crash. He won the US F5000 championship from 1974 to '76 and the IMSA championship in 1981.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Floyd Roberts fatal crash at Indy 1939 on lap 106 when he hit the spinning car of Bob Swanson and was launched into and through a fence at over 100mph. Floyd died of head injuries.

Roberts had won Indy the year before after starting from pole.

Swanson died a year later while qualifying for a midget car race in Ohio.
Roberts and Vukovich are the only two winners of the 500 to die in the race.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

F1 driver Tom Pryce turned his hand to rallying during the 1976 Tour of Epynt in a Prodrive entered Lancia Stratos, sadly it only lasted 10 miles into the first stage before the car hit a bridge...

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

There's been a number of posts featuring the huge Stan Fox accident at Indy 1995, but these are a few that I haven't seen.

Stan started 9th and on lap one at the first turn spun and was collected by Eddie Cheever and a number of other cars. The Hemelgarn Racing Reynard had the front ripped off, exposing Fox's legs and he was lucky not to lose them as the car continued its crash over several hundred feet. Stan suffered serious head injuries and was in a coma for five days. He retired after this but would sadly lose his life in a head-on road crash in New Zealand in 2000.

Stan competed in Indycar from 1984 to '95 taking part in 13 races. He mainly raced at the Indy 500, but in 1984 attempted most of the season but failed to qualify for seven of them. His best result was 7th in 1987, he also finished 8th in '91 both at Indy.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Actually Fox was not killed in the road crash but his was mentally impaired thereafter. He always talked about wanting to race again and may have tested a midget. He did die but some years after the road crash.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

An interesting image (photo one) taken soon after the crash at the start of the Italian GP at Monza on 1978. On the right drivers and medical staff are tending to Ronnie Peterson after he was dragged from his burning Lotus and on the left is Vittorio Brambilla who had been taken out of his Surtees.

I haven't seen the second photo before, this is taken just after the crash and show drivers as well as marshalls fighting the fire and getting ready to pull Ronnie out of the wreck.

It is often forgotten that Brambilla suffered what was thought at the time as the more serious injuries of the two drivers, he was knocked unconscious by a flying wheel and had very bad head injuries. But while Vittorio made a full recovery and returned to F1, tragically Ronnie died the following day of an embolism.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

The hideous looking Eagle Aircraft Flyer was entered into the 1982 Indy 500 and sadly failed to qualify. This strangely long and thin creation sported a normally aspirated Chevy small block V8 and was driven by Ken Hamilton. After this failure the car was never entered in a race again...
