James McElreath Jnr's fatal USAC Sprint Car crash at Winchester Speedway in Indiana in 1977. James car was launched over the guard rail, crashing in a tree over 300 feet away. James father the Indy 500 veteran Jim was part of his sons pit crew and ran to the car helping to get his son out. Tragically James died of massive head and neck injuries. James had already won three Sprint Car titles in a two year period and appeared to have a successful single-seater career in front of him. |

Niki Lauda crashes out in his Ferrari on the opening lap of the German GP 1974 at the Nurburgring, attempting to overtake Scheckter's Tyrrell for second place.

Lap 199 of the Indy 500 in 1989 and Emerson Fittipaldi makes a move on Al Unser Jnr at turn three going underneath and touching wheels. Unser crashed out into the wall and Emerson went on to win his first '500.

Johnny Servoz-Gavin crashes out of qualifying from the 1970 Monaco GP in his Tyrrell entered March 701. He failed to make the cut and decided to quit motor racing. Johnny had suffered an eye injury in an event in the winter of 1969 and felt that his eye sight was now damaged. He had taken part in 12 GP finishing 2nd at the Italian GP 1968. He was French F3 champion in 1966 and European F2 champion in 1969. All of his F1 races were with Tyrrell, he shocked the establishment by qualifying 2nd and leading his first GP at Monaco 1968 before damaging his car after clipping the chicane. |

The last attempt to qualify a front engined roadster at Indy in 1972, Jim Hurtubise in the bizarre looking Miller Mallard/Novi. He didn't make the cut...
