Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Thank you very much, if only one person got any type of value out of this thread then any time or work put in is worth it Im glad to see that that many members are interested, that makes it well worth it And you are in my wheelhouse right now as 60s-70s and 80s are the decades I have just a small tiny fraction of knowledge about I have photos of the crashes of Jim Clark, Piers Courage (most are amateur shots from the crowd) but I dont have very many as they are rare and not many taken I will dig those out, as well as Jo Schlesser, not sure if I have any that you have not seen, but you never know, I just might |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Using bails of hay as crash barriers is at the same time the stupidest thing I have ever heard of, and the most tragic Bandini lost his life because of the hay, no question at all, it was not a hard impact and Bandini died from 3rd degree burns over 80% of his body, his impact related injuries were survivable And as you noted the jaw dropping quickness at which the fire spreads, the racing fuel hitting the hay would be like throwing gasoline on Napalm Who ever was in charge of safety for the city course is an idiot If that person is stil alive today I hope he hears Bandini's screams and sees his body being pulled out of the car all night long in his dreams |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
That last photo of Courage's accident is very haunting. I've got the book by Adam Cooper which has got that one in. I've spent time looking at it and it could be the body of poor Piers sitting facing the engine...Is that his head between the post in the middle and the broken catch fencing?

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I have that same book, im not sure if I personally scanned it from the book or if another racing fan did and posted it years ago and I saved it, but either way I can tell by the contrast that it was scanned (a pretty good one considering the pic size in the book) from a book or magazine I tried to crop that section out and enlarge but the pixles start to fly around so this is the best I could do I think you might be on to something, I see the head between the post and broken catch fence that you were talking about, but it looks to be just a little to big, look at the size of the Policemans head who is closer to the camera (and remember Piers helmet was knocked off his head when one of his broken off tires struck his helmet just like in the Tom Pryce incident with the fire extinguisher only with a tire, so no larger helmeted head) is almost the same size However I have always had trouble with this picture because I know it was taken shortly after the accident happened as hardley anyone is on the scene to help, so I know that he is in there somewhere (unless blocked by or buried under the wreck) and I thought he was further down in the wreck by the roll cage (Its hard to point out and see) and what you are seeing I am seeing as well, just trying to make the image work in my head Here is the next picture of the Marshals pulling Piers away and just by looking at how they are dragging him and the angle it looks like they ran right up to the position you have Piers in and grabbed under both arms and pulled him away So using that second picture the image you believe is Piers very well could be. Good job man, this is always how the driver is found in pictures that just shows twisted metal, a different opinion to take your head off what you think is the body and then some teamwork Im going to look at some other photos to see if there is any type of clue Here are the two closeups |
