Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Lars-Erik Torph was on the verge of international rally success when he lost his life in bizarre circumstances.

Torph and his co-driver Bertil-Rune Rehnfeldt were spectating during the 1989 Monte Carlo rally when Alex Fiorio’s car left the road at around 100 mph and hit and killed both Torph and Rehnfeldt.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Huston Platt's Chevrolet Camaro Funny Car left the Yellow River Dragstrip near Covington, Georgia at 180mph on March 2nd 1969, crashing into an embankment, through a wire fence and into the crowd. There was no guardrail at all at this point of the track, 250 yards from the finish line. Eleven spectators died at the track and one later in hospital.

There were eye witness reports that a spectator had been on the track side when Platt activated his parachute and that this unfortunate individual was sucked into the 'chute and it was this that led to the Camaro leaving the track.

The track's safety was basic to say the least and it was closed after this tragedy.

What's left of Donald Campbell's Bluebird CN7 after its crash at Bonneville in 1960 during a land speed record attempt. The CN7 was accelerating up to almost 350 mph when it skidded and crashed for over a quarter of a mile. Campbell was rushed to hospital with a skull fracture.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Michael Curtis Waltrip's huge crash at the Bristol Motor Speedway in 1990 after hitting the end of a wall and completely destoying his Pontiac. He somehow walked away with only cuts and bruises.
i've been watching racing for 40+ years and i have to so this one was the most destructive crash i've seen outside of top-fuel drag racing.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Art Arfons was a drag racing, land speed record, tractor pulling legend who sadly died in 2007 aged 81.

He had a number of huge crashes that he managed to escape, none luckier than in 1971 at the Dallas International Motor Speedway in Lewisville in his jet engined Super Cyclops, fitted with a second seat crashed heavily during an exhibition run.

The passenger in the car was news reporter Gene Thomas and he perished with two other track workers when the car burst a tyre and crashed heavily, rolling over at nearly 300mph.

Art was the world land speed record holder three times from 1964 to 1965, in 1979 he won the NTPA Tractor Pull Championship.

French motor cycle racer Patrick Pons fatal crash during the 1980 500cc World Championship race at Silverstone. Pons fell at the fast Beckets Corner and was hit by his countryman Michel Rougerie, he would die two days later in hospital.

Pons was the first Frenchman to win an FIM World Championship when he won the 1979 Formula 750cc title and in 1980 he won the Daytona 200.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Horrible scenes at the 250cc World Championship race at Hockenheim 1989 after Andreas Preining's engine seized and Ivan Palazzese collided with his slowing bike. Ivan was trying to get out of the way when he was hit by two other bikes.

It was left to other riders to rush to the injured who lay on the track. Virginio Ferrari began trying to revive Ivan was already lost to chest injuries.

The race was not stopped by inept track managment and the leading pack roared into the stadium to find the injured, other riders, marshalls and pit crew on the track. Carlos Cardus fell, it was very lucky more people were not killed and injured at this point.

Ivan was survived by his wife who would give birth to his son a few months after his death. Ivan had won two 125 cc races in 1982.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

The P34 is a classic but I don't remember seeing the Pat Clancy Special before. Nice one.

Some other six wheel F1 cars, these one's didn't make it to a race.

The first four photos are of the Williams FW08B from 1982.

The rest are of the 1977 March 2-4-0.
