Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Felice Bonetto was leading the Carrera Panamericana in 1953 in a Lancia before losing control at around 125 mph and crashing into a lamp-post, instantly losing his life.

Bonetto had won the non-Championship Portuguese Grand Prix in 1953 as well as the 1952 Targa Florio.

Rick Mears huge crash during practice for the Indy 500 in 1992, he walked away with a broken wrist before retiring later that year.

Four times Indy 500 winner, six times on the pole there and three times Indy Car Champ, one of the all-time greats.

Buddy Baker crashed his Dodge out of the lead and into the rear of James Hylton's car during the Texas 500 in 1969 while under caution, trying to read his pit-board.

Windowlicker,
Enjoy your posts, especially the unusual race cars. Do you remember or know of the Tyrrell P34?

or the Pat Clancy Special that raced in the 1948 Indy 500?

The P34 is a classic but I don't remember seeing the Pat Clancy Special before. Nice one.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

There has been a number of posts covering Italian Ferrari driver Lorenzo Bandini's fatal crash at the Monaco GP in 1967 but I think these photos are new to the thread.

Lorenzo lost control on lap 82 at the chicane and the car overturned after hitting straw bales at the side of the course and burst into flames. The driver was trapped in the burning wreck and when he was finally dragged clear he had suffered terrible burns and chest injuries, which he sadly succumbed to three days later.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Tommy Kendall took a big hit in the Intrepid GTP where McDuffie crashed. I wonder which shunt brought about the "inner loop".

From Wiki,

'The chicane was removed in 1985, but another chicane called the "Inner Loop" was installed in 1992 after a fatal accident during the previous year's NASCAR Winston Cup event.'
