Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

James Hunt throws a right hook and knocks a marshal who was trying to help him on his ass at the 1977 Canadian Grand Prix

Awesome clip
Do you know anything about the story on this? Why the hell did he hit him? lol It seems like afterwards he feels awful for it and apologizes a couple different times. I know I've felt like doing that before just because they come right up to u after a wreck or when ur pissed at another racer and trying to "talk" to him, and we never want to talk to them then!

Super rare clip of Rick Mears 1991 Practice crash

Not his 1992 practice crash that was well published and easily found today on many websites
The greatest driver ever at Indy... Just one of my numerous opinions, but a lot of ppl would agree. A lot of stats do too! Thanks AK!

Well here's the info from Wiki.... it's pretty accurate and does explain why emotions were running hot.

Andretti led from pole followed by Hunt and Mass in the second McLaren. James Hunt eventually took the lead from Andretti but while attempting to lap his teammate Mass, the two collided. Hunt, visibly furious, jumped out of his wrecked McLaren and punched the face of a marshall, who was trying to usher Hunt away. Hunt was fined $2,000 for his actions.

After a stack like that, no doubt exacerbated by the fact it was due to his team-mate I'd have been pissed off as well, but I suspect he was actually a little disorientated, there's a definite stumble or 2 after he gets out the wreck.

James Hunt lived "the life", alleged to have indulged in his career, he certainly hit the drink & drugs after it, eventually he went bankrupt. By luck he became a commentator on the BBC and excelled with Murray Walker even though he was far from politically correct.

One famous time at Monaco he was listening to Murray give a lengthy explanation why Liger driver Rene Arnoux was slower now than in his prime, and saying Arnoux blamed it on now driving a normally aspirated car rather than a turbo.... so live on TV Hunt says "Well all I can say to that is Bullshit". (It is on you tube, well worth a search).

His premature death at 45 from a heart attack was a shock as he'd appeared to finally settled down, sadly all the damage/abuse had been mounting up.

Current F1 driver and 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen is a big Hunt fan, he entered a snowmobile race under the name James Hunt and this year at Monaco raced in a replica helmet.

Next year Ron Howard is releasing his film "Rush" - the story of the 1976 season involving Niki Lauda & Hunt. If it's similar to "Senna" it'll be worth watching (hopefully without the glorious whitewashing homage that blighted Senna for fans).

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

I've always been a big fan of Mears. He always came over as a really genuine bloke who would be fast in anything he raced. I would have liked to see him in F1 and he did get close to driving a Brabham F1 car in the 1980 Long Beach Grand Prix. He tested the car alongside Nelson Piquet at Riverside Raceway days before the race he was unable to start as the FIA would not allow a third car in the race. Although Rick tested with the Brabham team on two more occasions he never raced in a Grand Prix.

The works Fiat 131 Arbarth's of Walter Rohl and Bernard Darniche somehow crash into each other during a stage of the 1978 Monte Carlo Rally. Rohl went on to finish 4th, Darniche 5th.

We lived a few blocks from Art Sugai when I was a kid but only for a couple years. No shit.
