[The Dark]

Today (31st) is the 13th anniversary of Greg Moore's crash. The live footage of the crash was scary, as the director switched angles, Moore's car was already backwards and flying towards the inside wall, sadly it hit an access road which was enough to roll the car so it impacted directly onto the concrete wall with the cockpit.

A bit like the Smiley crash, this was so violent anyone who knew the slightest thing about motorsport knew how severe it was. Even the commentators paused before announcing who it was. The Steve Olvey book has a sequence on the crash, the attending team knew he was gone, but standard "practice" had to be followed and Moore officially died at the hospital.

Here's the ironic bit, Greg Moore was a huge pal of Dario Franchitti, he even introduced Dario to his future wife, actress Ashley Judd. Dario lost the title in that final race of the season. Move forward to 2011, and Dario's friend Dan Wheldon dies in a crash and this time Dario wins the title.

More crazily, Greg Moore had signed for a new team for 2000, Dan Wheldon had signed for a new team in 2012. Greg's replacement was a brazilian called Helio Castro-Neves (some may know him as a participant from Dancing With The Stars) who in 2010 had a long drawn out court case with the IRS (he won!!!!!) because of the legal issues that occurred when he inherited Greg's contract.

Castro-Neves won the first race of the 2012 season in St Petersburg (Wheldon's hometown) he stopped his car right by a sign in the newly named "Dan Wheldon Way".

Greg Moore seems to have been a brilliant guy, the life & soul of the party, but in my opinion he is one of Indycars greatest lost talents, I believe he could easily have won multiple titles, Indy 500s and been seen as an all-time great. Sad loss.

I enlarged each picture just enough so no resolution was lost and no pixelation occurred

Can't say enough about your pics of Gordon, as a fan of Indy Car I know the guys on the cameras were told later to draw back from the fatal crashes, you have gotten the best of the best. I also know that color pics were taken of Gordon's crash but were never released.

It's a sad day anytime a racer dies. Scotty Brayton really hit me hard, but I know they died doing what they loved. I only wish I will die doing what I love. That would be the ultimate.

Ayrton Senna loses control of his McLaren MP4/6-Honda in the ultra fast 180 deg 5th gear Curva Peraltada in qualifying for the 1991 Mexican GP. This was Ayrton's first real scare in F1 and fortunately only resulted in a bump on the head. In past races Derek Warwick and Philippe Alliot were a little worse for wear.

I liked Scott Brayton a lot

His death was one of many that turned me off from motorsports in the mid/late 1990s

The racing world lost a true icon and a truly amazing man. Every race car driver on any level should strive to be more like Dan in every way. What we do OFF the racetrack means much more than what we can do with the steering wheel. The things we do off the track is what really makes memories and legends. RIP Dan. I wish we could have seen what his future career had in store for us. He was gonna do more on the track in the next few years than he had ever done before. I was so excited to see him race again for Andretti!

I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the way Firestone handled Brayton's crash. They took no responsibility for the crash, when in fact the tire malfunctioned and just went flat. No punctures or anything of the sort. Just very suddenly lost air. But their story was completely different.
