Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

A big one for Charlie Kimball at Pocono 2015 during qualifying. He was caught out by a cross wind but got away with two stitches on his chin.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Some new to the thread photos from the fatal crash of Tom Pryce at the South African GP 1977.

Neither the poor Pryce or the marshall he hit, Frederik Jansen van Vuure had any chance and both were dead on impact. The fire extinguisher that van Vuure was carrying hit Pryce full in the face ripping off his crash helmet and inflicting huge head injuries. The marshal was virtually torn in two...

Tom took part in 42 GP's from 1974, scoring 19 points with one pole and a best result of two 3rd places. He won the Brands Hatch Race of Champions, a non-championship GP in 1975

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Alfonso de Portago was an all round sportsman, three times amateur champion jockey, he was an international-class swimmer and created the 1957 Spanish bobsleigh team to take part in the 1956 winter Olympics.

He started his Grand Prix career for Ferrari in 1956, finishing second in the British race with Peter Collins. He also took part in a large number of Sportcar races.

He was unhappy to take part in the 1957 Mille Miglia road race which he considered unnecessarily dangerous, but he competed nevertheless and 120km into the course disaster struck.

It's thought a tyre burst, hurling the Ferrari of de Portago and co-driver Ed Nelson into a group of spectators. The car left the road at around 150 mph careering along the edge of a canal, five onlookers were killed including two children.

The Ferrari's bonnet came adrift cutting de Portago in two. After this tragedy the Mille Miglia was banned by the Italian goverment.

Another photo from de Portago's fatal crash at the 1957 Mille Miglia road race. The wreckage shows that he had no hope of walking away from this one.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

The aftermath of Elio de Angelis fatal testing crash at the Paul Ricard curcuit in France 1986. Elio's rear wing came off of his car, the Brabham BT55 then vaulted the guardrail and came to rest upside down and on fire. What happened after this was a disgrace, with uncomfortable similarities to Bandini and Williamson's accidents years before. As this was private testing there were no fire marshals and it took other drivers and mechanics a long time to get him out. Elio died later that day of his injuries...

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

The aftermath of Jo Siffert's fatal crash at the end of season, non championship race at Brands Hatch October 24th 1971.

The remains of Jo Siffert's BRM P160 is upside down after hitting a bank stopping just before Hawthorn corner at the back of the circuit. He was being followed by John Surtees at the time, John said, "The rear of the BRM exploded, it careered to the left and burst into flames when it hit the bank."
The flames were so intense that it took a long time to get to Jo. By the time they did he was dead, he had died from inhailing the smoke and fumes. His only physical injury was a broken ankle.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

According to Dr. Steve Olvey's book Rapid Response
• Francois Cevert's torso was cut in 2 by the Armco barrier on a diagonal from an arm pit to his opposite hip.

• Tom Price was partially decapitated by the chin strap of his helmet as the fire extinguisher hit him and rotated the helmet off his head from front to back. The fire extinguisher landed in a parking lot next to the race course.
The 19 yr old marshal, Frederik Jansen van Vuure, was unrecognizable and could only be positively identified because he was the only marshal they could not account for later.

• Jo Siffert's car had a lot of magnesium parts and they could not put out the fire with the fire fighting equipment they had on hand. He was not removed from the car until after the fire burned itself out.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

This is grisly one....

Poor Helmuth Koinigg was taking place in only his second GP at the Watkins Glen track in the US on the sixth of October 1974 when early in the race his car left the track, with a possible pucture.

The car went over the gravel trap and hit the barrier hard, and the two tier armco split letting the Surtees TS16 underneath horrifically be-heading the young Austrian driver.

What seems even more terrible is that the race was not stopped and a cover was placed over the car with the drivers dead body still strapped in the cockpit, his head still in his helmet.

The photos are difficult to make out, but the circled one shows his helmet (with head inside) on the left, his body stapped in on the right.
Original post from page 31.

Another new post of Koinigg's horrific fatal crash at the US GP 1974. It's not the best image but you can just about make out that he is still in the car...
