Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Readville Speedway (near Boston) 1932. A seven-car pileup in a roadster race trapped Al Fraser in his car, and he was burned to death. Two other drivers, two spectators and a policeman were injured in the crash and in the subsequent attempts of extracting Fraser from the wreck. The accident happened on the back stretch on the seventh mile of a fifty mile race. Two cars locked wheels and stalled in the middle of the track. Fraser who was leading the race crashed into the two standing cars, followed by four other vehicles. |

Mike Whitehead is thrown out of his Ginetta in a hard looking crash at Mallory Park in 1965. He died in hospital a week later.

Whitehead crash not mentioned at Motorsports Memorial. Where did you get the information?

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
OK thanks they note it is not listed at Motorsports Memorial. In fact that is the thread that spawned Motorsports Memorial. I contributed many times when I participated in that forum then called Atlas F1 from 2000 to 2009.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
My god I love this thread. I don't even like racing but for the wrecks and such, but this thread is honestly why I keep coming back. There is always something fresh here to view and gobs of entertainment. Thank you for this stellar thread everyone. Keep up the great work, and though these racers are indeed brave and talented, I can't help but want for another intense viewing of carnage here. Thanks again guys |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I haven't seen these photos in the thread before of poor Roger Williamson still in his inverted March at the Dutch GP in '73. Most images blur out his body. The one without the tarp is very large and doesn't pull any punches. It shows just how much of Roger was visible in the car but that he simply couldn't get out. No wonder Dave Purley was in such a panic to help him, he would have seen and heard things that he would not never be able to forget...

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
A few new images from the aftermath of Francois Cevert's fatal qualifying crash at the US GP 1973. This had taken place not long after Williamson fatal accident and the drivers had decided that if one of their own was in trouble the marshals could not be trusted to help. That's why so many drivers stopped at the scene which is unusual after accidents at the time. Many will have wished they hadn't. Rookie Jody Scheckter was one of the first at the scene to check on Cevert and always stated that this altered his whole outlook on driver safety. |
