Apparently there were a couple of sandbanks in the escape road too. Looks like it completely buckled up and flipped.

Epperly somehow survived but the remains of his left leg had to be amputated first mid thigh then subsequently at the hip. Original caption suggests the object seen tumbling towards the verge centre pic is Epperly's lower left leg with his shoe still attached.

I remember Innes had a shunt a Monaco once and he asked the nuns who were attending to him if his 'wedding tackle' was still intact! He also indicated that he came out of the tunnel before his Lotus!

It rather looks like they're having a good old rummage in that department in the Seattle pic.. Ireland's wrecked lotus 21 at the exit of the Monaco tunnel in '61. Judging by the state of the steering wheel I think this may have been the accident he was talking about! |
