Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Wire photo of Marios '69 indy wreck. Not sure if we've had this before. Chapman kind of had a lot of blood on his hands. I forget who said it to who, but the quote was something like "If you drive for lotus you're more likely to win the championship, drive for ferrari you're more likely to live". Anyone able to place that?

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

A post from page 84.

I found a photo of Rigby's wrecked car and I've included the amazing Mechanix front page photo again.

Just a phenomenal thread. This is my first post.

Been reading every post and looking at every pic (vids won't play - I'm on an iPad - but a quick internet search turns up most of them.)

I'm only on page 180 or so, and I don't know if this has been brought up, but the car in the field is not Rigby's car. Atleast, it's not the same car leaving the track in the famed picture. For a reference, compare the wheels, but there are other differences.

Anyways, keep it coming.

Really one of the more quality threads on any kind of message board.

Hey Nice to meet you Thinktank.
Page 180 or so. Your almost there. Took me several weeks to read all the posts and I agree, RE: quality threads

I think.....it was Jochen Rindt. This is the quote I found "“you’ve got more chance of surviving with Brabham, but more chance of winning the championship with Lotus”.

Obviously sadly prophetic, I'm not convinced he'd have survived the crash even with proper seatbelt harness (for those who don't know he didn't wear a crotch strap and in his crash he slid down and sustained throat injuries from the buckle that would kill him) as he did lose a lot of blood and have other trauma - I believe he would have lost his foot had he survived.

What's undeniable is that it clearly was a mechanical failure that pitched him left into the barrier.

The documentary - The Killer Years had a very tense interview with Rindt's widow, she clearly never forgave Chapman.

Hi Thinktank50, I've had another look at the Jim Rigsby photo's and I'm going to stick my neck out and say that it is the same car...
I think its compairing the colour with the black and white photo that can create issues...I don't know what every one else thinks?

There are a few sites out there that have the image and state it's Rigsby...the distance from the track is about right and it's in the 'cabbage patch' and the car has the darker colour at the bottom and white above...

But more importantly, glad you found us and are enjoying the thread.

Jochen Rindt knew it...

This is the letter that Jochen sent to Colin Chapman shortly after his huge crash at the Spanish GP in 1969 caused when his rear wing collapsed while leading.

Well, this is what I'm looking at, and you all can tell me what you think.

The wheels; in the color "launch" photo, I'm not looking at the color of the wheels so much as the contrast between the hubs and the rest of the wheel. Also, the front hub looks machined, flat, and considerably larger than the rear hub. The front and rear hubs are so different in the color photo, and so similar in the black and white photo.

Also, the exhaust cutout is very square and large on
the color photo cut much different on the black and white. Granted, I'm comparing the left to the right side on both of these comparisons, and I don't know much about the build of that particular car (I did locate a picture, with a quick search on google, of him in a car a few months before his accident and it was of the right side with the smaller cutout...but could have been a different car), could be just that way.

Lastly, on the rear of the wrecked car, where the number 37 should be, you can faintly make out a "5".

I'm not a farmer, and I don't know what cabbage coming up looks like, but it could be that this pick is just attributed to him because its in a farmed field.

And hey, I'm not trying to be "that guy", lol. I just know that some of you are passionate about your collection and I just saw some things that made me question the accuracy of the pic. Just kind of made a fun little mystery for me and made me that much more inthralled in this thread.

And I admit I could be wrong on all accounts, my knowledge is nowhere near yours.

Keep up the good work. I'm on page 190 something now.
