I dont want this thread to branch out into other racing type accidents (I.E. Motorcycle, Street, Baja, all those Asian type street/course racing) but this is a safety issue and this is the strongest most horrifying accident do to track design you will ever see

However because we have been talking the entire thread about the amazing awesome job that the "Key Stone Cops Crew" working the track have done in the following situations, like, being in charge of track safety, in charge of crowd safety, slowly walking to a driver who is burning to death one day, then running at light speed the next day only to stand there and watch him burn to death, reporting an oilslick on the track AFTER a fatal accident or two, spraying flame retardant from across the track on a car causing the next 11 cars to drive over the slick track and crash as well

I could go on forever as we al know, but track safety when it comes to designing a track in a stadium type setting is the biggest no brainer in the world, I mean your building it for racing, every safety issue can be addressed before its built!

I mean the person designing the track would never ever do something stupid like say um lets see hmmmm ummmmm....build stairwells going down to the track level on the track side of the walls for ease of access for track workers and riders and managers and reporters, thats much more important then the safety of some random driver/rider named right?

Geoff Bodine has a massive crash at the Daytona 250 Nascar Craftsman Truck race on February 18, 2000. Bodine's truck was destroyed when it became airborne and hit the catch fencing. 13 other trucks were also involved making it one of the largest wrecks in this series history.

Geoff broke his right wrist, right cheekbone, a vertebra in his back, and his right ankle, and also suffered a concussion. Nine fans were also injured in the accident.

The riders name is Zbigniew Raniszewski and the name of the track was Wien in Vienna, Austria

Im sure by watching the clip above that right away you know thats a fatal accident

Here is a rare color picture of Jochen Rindt after the accident

He is on the stretcher and some track or medic crew is holding a blanket to block anyone from the crowd taking pictures, but person was on the other side and took this picture

And same with anything I say is "rare" it was rare 10 or so years ago, for all I know what was rare back in the day is now on page one of Google Image Search

So if something is not rare and I say it is, dont give me too much shit for it, I can take a little ribbing

Being a huge auto racing fan myself this has a wealth of info and some truly heartbreaking stories and photos
The thing that really shocks me is the safety standards of the time.I mean I have read about it but to see it in action on some of the clips is appalling
I'm just glad Jackie Stewart had enough balls to speak out about it or there would probably be a hell of a lot more talented men to remember

This is the Japanese GP 1977, lap 5 and Gilles Villeneuve makes a mistake under breaking for the hairpin and launches his Ferrari 312 T2 over the back of Ronnie Peterson's Tyrrell P34 six-wheeler.

Villeneuve in only his third GP barrell rolls over a barrier into a prohibited area killing two bystanders. Both drivers walked away but both would later perish in crashes, Peterson at the Italian GP 1978, Gilles in practise for the Belgian GP 1982.
