19 year old 2nd year student was found hanging in her room at a boarding house, roughly 24 hours after she had last been heard from. When her parents could not reach her, her father and one of her friends went to the location and forcibly entered the apartment only to find that she had hanged herself with a bedsheet the day before. Several of her friends said she had been depressed about her student loans and about an illness her mother was suffering from.

The police report noted that the typical findings in a suicidal hanging were all present and that her feet were flat on the ground beside a stack of six plastic chairs, which she probably stepped off of after tying the sheet.

The police also informed reporters of the results of the visual examination: her tongue was swollen, protruding and bitten tightly between her teeth...the ligature mark matched the bed sheet noose...her fingers were curled inward...and she was doubly incontinent in death, with urine and feces being present in her trousers.

They also indicated that there was blood on and beneath both of her feet. The reason for this was not explicitly stated, but the family was concerned enough about it to order a formal autopsy (which is very uncommon in clear suicide cases due to cost).

Personally, I am not sure from the videos what is up with the blood. It could be one of several things. She's been dead an entire day. Could be decomp drainage from her anus or genitals or possibly even from her feet if blood has pooled and thickened there long enough to split the skin under her toenails, which I have seen before. But all of the visible tissue above her ankles looks whole and undamaged. Bit of livor, but no sloughing or blebs or ruptures.

It could conceivably be from the deep lacerations in her tongue, something else I have seen in many hangings, but tbh it feels like too much blood for that.

In some of the videos, it looks to me like insect predation on her feet which, combined with a lot of thick, pooled postmortem blood, could have bled quite easily after ants/beetles/flies did some podiatric feeding.

Hard to say. I do think it is a suicide, as do the cops, but the blood on her feet is interesting and a bit more prevalent than we usually see. My money's still on decomp tissue rupture, maybe combined with insect activity and dripping from her bitten tongue, but who knows.

Just a safety note: notice that the high balcony she is standing on has railings that are very wide, and would easily let a small child through. It the US, we have to build railings not wider than a tennis ball diameter, if memory serves. Different country, standards.

Thanks for sharing. It's a shame that many people - especially young - think that suicide is the only way out. Rest in peace.

Wouldn’t her height combined with standing on all chairs would have prevented her from tying the knot ergonomically?

In India, the balcony railings need to be close enough together to insure a child gets incinerated during a fire. Different country, different standards.
