Re: India's Waterways...

Unless I'm severely mistaken, that's the Ganges river. It's a holy river in India, which people use for everything. They wash their car, prepare their food, bathe, brush their teeth, do their laundry, and also "bury" the dead in that river. It's not like no one notices the corpses floating around, but they're not abnormal there, so there's no need to panic.

Needless to say any non-Indian would become very ill and possibly die if they get in contact with Ganges water. The Indians themselves are immune to the filth because they've been exposed to it all their lives.
If I'm not mistaken, I've heard some believe that spreading your ashes in the Ganges releases your soul from the cycle of reincarnation.

Also pic. #9 looks like the outfit of a monk.

I would think so. It kills you, and your diseases go on their merry way.

"Ganges" sounds like a disease itself....."he died of Ganges..."

Re: India's Waterways...

this is Varanasi, a city where Hindus believe if you die there, then you break the cycle of birth and rebirth. it takes about 200 kilos of wood to burn the body, but if you can not afford the price of 200 kilos of wood ....well you just make do !
