Re: Indebted Family Commits Suicide
Yes, and this type of motivation extends far beyond harming oneself. There would be a lot fewer "suicide bombers" if they didn't believe that they would be going straight to Muslim heaven as glorious martyrs to encounter all those virgins. Up to now Christianity hasn't picked up on this particular corruption (fortunately Jesus wasn't the violent militant that Mohammed was, preaching "love your enemies", "do good to those who despitefully use you", etc.), but we in the West will be in big trouble if it does.

As far as I can remember, life for Buddhist is a endless reincarnation cycle among 6 different worlds (Paradise, Hell, Human World are all included), unless you become a Buddha then your reincarnation ends with your death in this life. |

Re: Indebted Family Commits Suicide
Yes, but of course the goal of enlightenment is to eventually escape from these repeated rounds of reincarnations (Samsara) and be absorbed into being itself (Whatever that means it doesn't mean survival as a distinct individual.) In Buddhist and other Indian religious terminology the goal is liberation from Samsara into Nirvana).

Well, they probably knew too well what would await them if they didn't pay the debt, so they took the easy way out. Better to die quickly and without much pain than to be tortured to death by gang members. |
