Human Skull Found Inside Crawlspace in South Carolina

Rock Hill police are investigating after bones that are “possible human remains” were found Tuesday in the crawl space of a building being renovated near downtown.

Contractors working on the business building contacted police after the discovery, according to a statement from the Rock Hill Police Department. It is unclear how long the bones had been there. The remains were skeletal, police spokesman Lt. Michael Chavis said.

The bones have to be examined by a forensic anthropologist to determine how old they are and if they are human, Chavis said. It is unknown how long that will take. It is also possible the remains were display bones, or tied to a medical study.

The building was used as a personal injury law office for Duncan and Nobles LLC before. The building was recently sold to a holding company and was entirely vacant of tenants.

It was undergoing a full, top-to-bottom renovation—including structural crawl space remediation to prepare it for its next commercial tenant when the contractors discovered the skeleton.

“Out of respect for the individual and any surviving family members, we will not speculate about the circumstances or identity involved,” attorney James Duncan said.

“We recognize that this news may be unsettling to members of our community. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased, whose identity has yet to be determined, and we hope this discovery may ultimately provide answers and an opportunity for proper remembrance.”

Owner of that property before that injury law firm was attorney Sloan Law that had a private legal practice and before that from the 50's to the 80's houses there were transitioned from residential to commercial properties.

From the time the property was build around 1920, homes on Oakland Avenue were privately owned by local business leaders, physicians, and attorneys.

If I was the person who found it I wouldn’t have bothered anyone about it. I would have simply removed it, cleaned it up and placed it in my bone case where it could be seen and enjoyed. Skulls are cool. Especially human ones and this one has nice dentition.
