Re: Huachicoleo, Explosion Aftermath in San Primitivo, Mexico
96 as of Jan 22 MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The number of people who died in a gasoline pipeline explosion in central Mexico late last week has risen to 96, government officials said on Tuesday, from 91 reported a day earlier. The explosion last Friday occurred after hundreds of people crowded in to collect gasoline gushing from a pipeline that had been ruptured by suspected fuel thieves near to the town of Tlahuelilpan in the state of Hidalgo. Hidalgo’s government said in a statement that 96 people had been confirmed dead from the explosion, the worst to affect Mexico’s troubled oil infrastructure in several years. Another 48 people were receiving treatment for their injuries, it added. Central Mexico had been hard-hit by gasoline shortages since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador launched a crackdown on fuel theft nearly a month ago, ordering pipelines closed in an effort to stamp out criminal activity. |

If a giant open air gas geyser being mobbed by people isn’t safe then I don’t know what is

I wonder what ignited it. Someone's phone, car keyfob, static in clothing or was it really someone so dumb to have lit a naked flame?

isnt it possible to put a sensor on the pipes that tells the system of even the slightest pressure change by leak or intentional taps, and the system will cut off supply. I assume the technology exists to prevent thieves doing that on the pipes.

Re: Huachicoleo, Explosion Aftermath in San Primitivo, Mexico
I love how there is a cop right there. Standing on the road just a moment before the fireball occurs. They probably got some as well. Probably paid someone to fill up a container or 2 for them. I didn’t realize this had happened during the daylight hours. So obviously officials knew about it but let their citizens go to the scene and collect gas. If this happened in the states, maybe a few people would get away with getting some, but not more than that. Would have been closed off soon as. Officials obviously knew, they probably were expecting this, maybe even ignited it themselves somehow. |
