A fellow DR member recently lost her brother, Ryan, to a fentanyl overdose in Ontario, Canada. He was 25 years old. A few weeks ago, she made a post about her brother’s passing. She asked me to add her brother’s story here.

In Canada we are having a epidemic of huge proportions of people dying.

2 weeks away from having a baby. The guy he was with left him to die, and then died himself 2 days later. 14 people died that week, and I live in a small town. Its devastating lives, I don’t know about the states, but Canada is in the grip of something bad

I’m posting because so many young ppl are dying here in Canada. My brother was left to die by a junkie who could have called an ambulance and didn’t. And that POS died 2 days later. 14 ppl in my town are dead in the last 2 weeks from fentanyl. 14. All under 20 years old. Im posting to show ppl the effects it has on families.

They were drug addicts, but loved more than life, made bad decisions, but didn’t deserve to die. Ryan would have been a father in 2 weeks. HE was so smart and funny. And ppl in town fb me to tell me that he deserved it. NO ONE DOES

The dealers here are cutting heroin and coke with fentanyl, and its killing ppl at a rate unseen ever. 14 deaths in one week after my brother.

The guy he was with (his best friend) left him for dead, didn’t call an ambulance, just let him die. And then that guy died 2 days later from an OD.

No one in town will tell us what happened. PPL are posting on my FB that he deserved it. This is an epidemic worse than coke, crack or heroin.

I never in a million years thought my baby brother would go down that path. My daughters ask for him all the time, they are too small to understand. My heart is broken in a million pieces

Spiralling due to medical problems and desperate quick fixes is one thing. But pleasure drugs are absolutely damn stupid. Especially where meds are mixed in with the dealer drugs for way more guaranteed death.

On May 21, 2015, a 19 year old woman from Marion, Ohio died as a result of a fentanyl overdose.

A mother pays respects while holding her daughter’s one-year-old child in her arms. Her daughter died from an overdose from a new batch of heroin in Marion County, Ohio called 'blue drop'. This new batch is cut with fentanyl and is responsible for over 33 overdoses and two deaths in Marion County in less than two weeks.

She loved her 1-year-old daughter and that was what led her to seek recovery for her addiction.

"She had very high hopes," said her mother, "She did get to spend Mother's Day with her daughter, her wish."

The victim, 19, died early Thursday morning. She was one of nine reported overdoses in Marion County since Wednesday. Hers was the only fatal one as of Friday evening.

“Her daughter was the one thing she was trying very hard to get clean for," said a friend of the family. "But she had a lot of pain and depression."

When she was with her daughter, she was a good mom," her mother said.

"And a very good aunt to my son," added her brother.

"He called her Aunty all the time," he added. "We haven't explained to him where Aunty is yet."

She was reported as unresponsive at 1:31 a.m., said Chief Deputy Al Hayden, with the Marion County Sheriff's Office. A Pleasant Township emergency medical squad took her to Marion General Hospital, but she was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

In the Marion Police Department's annual report for 2014, Chief Bill Collins said drugs, particularly heroin, continue to put great strain on the community and the police. Almost 30 people reportedly died of drug overdoses in Marion County in 2014, more than half of them from heroin.

“She loved just hanging out and being with her daughter, being with her nephew," her mother said. “She loved life in general, loved her daughter more than anything. ... She loved her daughter more than life itself."

Marion County Children Services had removed the victim’s daughter from her care. Her brother said she was working to get clean and regain custody.

"She said she didn't want to live like that; she wanted to be a mother to her daughter," the friend of the family said. "But I just don't think that she had the resources, and I don't think she knew how. She was so young."

"She went to Foundations Recovery Center, she was going to meetings and everything she could," her brother said.

"I'm so proud of the progress she made toward recovery," her mother said.

"When she did get the opportunity to go to treatment, she gave it her all," her mother said. "She really did. And she was focused on coming out of there a better person, a better mother."

Her family hopes her story will increase awareness about the danger of drugs and the difficulties of recovery.
