For all those who are constantely asking why someone can hang himself/herself by just bending knees or other positions, where it would be easy to 'just stand up' and survive:

1) Ligature strangulation of the neck causes rapid loss of consciousness due to obliteration of arterial blood vessels (which normally provide oxygen to the brain).

2) If unconscious, body weight continues strangulation - resulting in death by hanging when brain is irreversible damaged by the depriviation of oxygen.

3) No action of self-saving is possible once unconscious (also reason for so called 'accidents')


Some scientific data for the lovers of physics:

Thirty-seven year old woman. Suicidal strangulation with a textile belt which had been turned twice around the neck. When her husband found her, he panicked and loosened the belt, without later being able to explain the original situation. No clear ligature mark; a markedly limited absence of livores indicates the strangulation region. A thin red line consisting of petechial bleedings in the middle of the pale skin of the anterior neck probably resulted from the compression of the skin between the two loops. Massive small bleedings of the entire face, sharply limited by the strangulation region.

I was not sure to post this case in our 'hanging' thread as it is no classic hanging, but accidental ligature strangulation due to electric grinder. I felt ligature mark is interesting for this thread, too. Hope you agree.

A young girl was accidentally strangled when her chunni (a piece of cloth worn around the neck by most Indian women) was caught in a moving electrical grinder. She was taken to the nearest hospital where she died within the next 9 h, remaining unconscious throughout the hospital stay.
