Re: Hanged Girls Thread! (Caution: Many Photos)
It takes around 5-10 seconds to lose consciousness, after hanging process starts. Of course it depends what kind of rope is beeing used. A thin nylon rope or cable, for instance, will cut in very deeply. This means bloodvessels in the neck will be compressed very efficiently. It will be a matter of seconds to pass out. If some cloth is used it might take longer, but we still talk about seconds. After loss of consciousness the body is obviously not dead, so it will continue to move for some minutes, but the victim wont notice anything. The pressure needed to block the outer bloodvessels leading to the head is very low. The weight of the Head itself is already enough. Thats why most suicidal hangings take place in kneeing, sitting or even lying position. The victims apply some pressue to the neck and after few seconds they lose consciousness, which means the body completly breaks down and hangs in the noose with full weight. At this point they cant save themselves anymore. Suicidal Hanging has nothing to do with suffocation, lack of breathing or even neck fractures. In many cases airways are not even obstructed. Those are all urban myths. Its all about the lack of blood circulation to the brain which causes death or serious brain damage after 3 minutes. Definetly a very painless way to go, if you dont own a gun. Far better than electrocutions, shooting squads, jumping or some nasty poisons which will hurt you alot. |

Re: Hanged Girls Thread! (Caution: Many Photos)
Not sure I agree with the 'nice and painless' theory about hanging as a method of dispatch. Take a gander at your choice of Iranian hanging videos and you'll clearly see that those people aren't jerking around in autonomic nerve reaction states. They are fighting and struggling in a far more deliberate fashion. And, of course, the very famous photos of Masha Bruskina being hanged at the yeast factory. Her face clearly displays pain, fear, and struggle in the photos taken after she started to hang. Definitely conscious, definitely hurting, and definitely terrified. Also, reading the statements of convicted killers who chose homicidal hanging as a means of dispatch for their victims (a rare choice, but it does happen), they make it fairly clear that there is a lengthy period of struggle, gasping for air, and pain before the victim finally passes out. GJ Schaefer discussed the process in one or two of his books after he was convicted of kidnapping two teenage runaway girls and hanging both of them. Glen Ocha was another who hanged a woman in his kitchen. His statement to the police talked about how surprised he was by how long she lasted, the way her socks kept sliding along the tile floor while she struggled to gain purchase, and how she pissed all over his kitchen floor before she died. I am not a forensic pathologist, though I have had some field experience and I've read a fairly substantial amount of forensics textbooks. Most have a lengthy section on asphyxiation and hanging in particular. While I will admit (and the text books agree) that manual/ligature strangulation is much more painful and prolonged than most hangings, the sources do seem to indicate that hanging (no-drop strangulation hanging that is) is not always as clean and easy of a process as some of you are making it out to be. That said, I've never hanged myself nor another human being. So my position is entirely academic. |

Re: Hanged Girls Thread! (Caution: Many Photos)
It all depends. The best example is the famous clip of two men and a woman hanged in Iran. The clip is 1:51, and the woman fights for about a minute, because the knot is in the front and the noose doesn't place the pressure so that blood to the brain is stopped. The men are swinging but not jerking, and they die peacefully. They don't even loose their sandals. I don't know if it is appropriate to post a link to a clip here, but google for "woman hanged iran". I did, and the first hit was this movieclip. But I guess that most of you know it. AFAIK this clip was the reason that filming iranian public hangings isn't allowed anymore. |

Re: Hanged Girls Thread! (Caution: Many Photos)
Those spasmic movements can be very extensive. Some victims even hurt themselves, while doing this. Usually people always think that this struggling person is still awake. But it is simply impossible. Regarding this video: You cant see the face of that woman, so it is impossible to judge this matter. But my guess is, she passed out. The movements fit into the sceme. Btw. I read those 2 men were executed before her, thats why they were motionless. Theres also another vid showing the female deliquent in a van, as she was brought to the place of execution: She was alone in this car (beside 1 guardswoman). This is supporting the fact the execution was seperated. Regarding single photos: As long as you dont know their exact time index you cant judge, too. The only clear vid example I know about is this: http://***********/media.php?name=18938-hanging It is some kind of weird chinese/japanese fetish game or something. You see the "victim" stepping off the chair. After like 4-5 seconds she want to get on the chair again, but you clearly see how fast she loses consciousness: She is unable to enter the chair after 4-5 seconds, which means a vey rapid loss of consciousness. You also see some spasmic movements of the body, arms and legs. Even after the body was released. So at least for me it perfectly supports the forensic literature. |
