Bad surgery job leads woman to hang herself

An honours degree student at Chulalongkorn University may have committed suicide yesterday after growing upset about her cosmetic surgery.

The body of Benyapa Senachan, 22, was found in her bedroom on the second floor of her two-storey house on Naknivas Road in the Lat Phrao area.

Family members found the woman, in a T-shirt and short jeans, hanging from a belt from a curtain rail, police said.

Her relatives told police Benyapa had undergone cosmetic surgery on her nose, chin and lips in April and often complained to them that her close friends did not like her new appearance.

Police suspected the woman may have felt depressed about the outcome of her cosmetic surgery and that it possibly had driven her to take her own life.

She had confided to friends that she was not satisfied with her new lips, Pol Lt Col Jirawat Yodkrahom, chief investigator at Chokechai police station, said.

She told her family she wanted to die so she could be reborn with new lips.

Her family said Benyapa had recently graduated with a 2nd class honours degree in dramatic arts from Chulalongkorn University's faculty of arts. She was to take part in a graduation ceremony next month.

Her family said she had come downstairs in the morning for a drink before returning to her room. At noon, a family member knocked on her door and called her to lunch, but there was no response. The family found her hanging from the rail. They tried to cut the belt but she was dead already. Police said she probably died three to four hours before.

And full suspension hanging causes same rapid loss of consciousness, not 15-90 secs. Experience is painful but short.

So you and some others say. But for everyone who claims that ANY hanging victim is unconscious in seconds, regardless of methods, there's another one who claims it takes far longer. 'Medical explanations' also offer varying theories, depending on whether the carotid, the airways, or the jugular veins are compressed.

Since no one answering the question has ever done a full-suspension hanging to the point of death, we only have survivor reports, conflicting (and often amateur) medical explanations, and a very small number of grainy videos- most of which do not feature a full-suspension hanging where the victim's face (and level of consciousness) can be ascertained.

My own knowledge is also amateur and based solely upon videos and photos, talking to a few suicide survivors, a handful of ME's, and reading hundreds of pages of scene investigations and autopsy reports from hanging suicides. I wasn't trying to present myself as any particular authority on the subject and am always amused by people who claim to be. Just answering the question to the best of my ability while waiting for one of a half-dozen hanging 'experts' from this forum to show up and summarily contradict half of it.
