The gun was a .22 caliber pistol from the looks of it. You can see the entry point just between where the mouth and chin would have been. He didn't want to stick the barrel in his mouth. Many suicides are done in this way. What people don't realize is that the .22 cal will change direction when met with a resistance or a change in density of a medium. The bullet bounced off of his jaw or skull and went straight up through his nose and then out right between his eyes. Hell of a shot if you ask me. This is exactly how Kennedy died. The bullet changed direction when it hit his skull.
