If the muzzle of a handgun is in contact with the skin when it's fired, the expanding gasses follow he bullet into he wound and blow the tissues apart. That's how those anti-shark weapons work. They use a .223 rifle cartridge with no bullet. The gasses alone blow the shark's guts apart. I agree with the large caliber handgun hypothesis.
