Guatemalan Woman Was Shot Dead Whilst Working at Eatery
Sayaxché, El Petén, Guatemala. The woman was identified as Lilian O., 35. Apparently she was targeted by the gunman, but no info on suspects or motive as of now.  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  · |

Not a great add, but an add’s an add. Most of the reports I read indicated she was involved in local government in some capacity. Councilwoman or assistant mayor or something.

With slim profit margins, and Lilian eating them out of house and restaurant, the eatery owners had to make drastic cuts, or specifically, drastic shots. Now they are back in the black.

Might be that Guatemala is still faces a high percentages of extortion kills especially in the North like here. There's 2 gangs controlling these, MS-13 and Barrio 18, but they are usally more concentrated in the big cities areas and in more rural areas like here minor local gangs and independent imitators do the extortions. These imitators call small, often food and retail, business owners using a burner phone and pretend to be a high ranking crime boss from the big cartels to intimidate them and threaten them with death or abduct one of their kids etc if they don't pay. Most of these calls are coming calls originate directly from inside Guatemala's prison system using smuggled mobile devices. If a business owner ignores their calls or figures out they are just a lone criminal, the imitator's entire business model fails so they hire a cheap sicario to maintain fear and ensure future victims pay up, an imitator will pool their stolen money to hire cheap local contract killers. They order a high-visibility strike, such as shooting a worker inside a local diner, purely to prove to the community that their threats are real, even though they are just operating an independent extortion scam. |
