Re: German Man Found Dead in Cambodia This Morning
I have a question about these expats living in SE Asia. We see so many around here from countries in the Anglosphere or Northern Europe, where living standards are much higher. So, why are they there? I know some are pedos or whatever, but pedophiles are thankfully a small percentage of the population, and there are ostensibly lots of Western expats living in that region. I was in Mali and Burkina for several months when I was a grad student to assist my thesis advisor on a research project. Out of the 188 countries the UN ranks by HDI, they are numbers 175 and 185, respectively, below places like Afghanistan and Haiti. And, when I was there, Mali had a problem with jihadis streaming in from the north who had been fighting Gaddafi's regime and were thus flush with weaponry and looking to take over (Mali 's government had to as France for help, and France responded with Operation Serval, in which they dismantled the movement and around a thousand of the jihadis, who styled themselves "al-Qaeda in the Maghreb" were KIA. The terrorist attacks in France started soon afterwards. Coincidence? But I am digressing from my digression). The point I'm getting around to is that I would rather live the rest of my life in Mali than spend a week in fucking Cambodia or Laos. I try to be an open-minded and reasonable individual, but Cambodia is the land of the Khmer Rouge. They murdered 1/3 of their population. A third! Included anyone with a postsecondary education and any and all monks. They had specific trees set aside for murdering babies, grasping them by the ankles and smashing them against the trunks. Cambodia was once referred to as "the gentle land", but Pol Pot destroyed whatever Cambodia was and now it is the land of bleak nihilism and human trafficking. I have written here about my friend who disappeared there. So, again, why the hell would anyone want to live there, or even visit? Maybe I am blinded by prejudice, but what do these places offer? |
