Gao Rongrong was an accountant at an art college in Shenyang, Liaoning, China, and a Falun Gong practitioner. Sent to the Longshan forced labor camp in July 2003, she suffered severe facial disfigurement on May 7, 2004, in what she and human rights groups described as hours of electric baton shocks by guards; photographs of her face, taken in hospital and smuggled out that July alongside an earlier portrait, circulated worldwide as the before and after images seen here. She escaped from the hospital that October, was re-arrested in March 2005, and died in custody on June 16, 2005, at age 37. Amnesty International documented her case and called for an investigation into her death; the Chinese authorities never acknowledged the torture, and there was no independent autopsy.
