Gao Rongrong, a Falun Gong practitioner, worked as an accountant at an art college in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. After being sent to the Longshan forced labor camp in July 2003, she sustained severe facial disfigurement on May 7, 2004, following what she and human rights groups described as hours of electric baton shocks by guards. Photos taken of her face in hospital, smuggled out that July with an earlier portrait, were circulated worldwide as before-and-after images.

She fled the hospital that October but was re-arrested in March 2005 and died in custody on June 16, 2005, aged 37. Amnesty International documented the case and called for an investigation into her death. Chinese authorities never acknowledged the torture, and no independent autopsy was performed.
