It was likely a buckshot load which is similar to getting hit with 8 to 10 9mm rounds simultaneously. That is easily enough to blow a person's head into pieces.

I’m assuming from recoil. You can pump fire a 870 if you hold the trigger the slide lock doesn’t work like a Mossberg and judging by the 3” magnum shell there was more than enough recoil is he was gripping the slide
