'Fake News' Kills Young Woman
A young Venezuelan woman living in Brazil was complaining on social media that 'fake news' was ruining her reputation and endangering her life. She was unsure who was spreading malicious lies about her, but various people on anonymous accounts had been broadcasting that she had AIDS, that she was tipping the police off about drug deals, and that she was stealing drugs and money from local gangs, and that she had kidnapped a baby. Though she insisted the rumors were all false (and indeed none seem to have been verified by police or media since her death), apparently it got her enough negative attention that it cost her her life. And her eyes. Her body was discovered the morning after she went missing from her apartment. She was lying in the brush, half-naked, with a ligature around her neck, multiple stab wounds on her body, and evidence of having been sodomized with an object, presumably a beer bottle. Her eyes had also been removed. Police have not yet indicated what order these events took place or which one was fatal, though presumably it was the strangulation or the multiple stabbings.  ·  ·  ·  · |
