Re: Exhumed 1918 Flu Victim

In fear of the pandemic flu a few years back it was decided to obtain samples of the 1918 flu virus. in Alaska there were graves in the permafrost that comtained bodies that were sufficiently preserved to still contain viable samples. This is probably that expedition.

You still have to wonder why you dig up and look for anything that killed 30 million people. How in the fuck did they know it wouldn't become airborne again. And I saw NO indication of CDC precautions or attemps of isolation.

No, they are fully frozen, perhaps some freeze drying.

Re: Exhumed 1918 Flu Victim

IIRC, this exhumation was unique in that they were in an area that was perpetually frozen. The whole point was to extract viral DNA of the Spanish Flu and the bodies in this frozen state would have been ideal candidates.

Re: Exhumed 1918 Flu Victim

The pandemic of 1918-19 claimed at least 30 million human lives

Spanish flu made its way around the world in three waves in 1918-19, leaving at least 30 million deaths and massive social and economic dislocation in its wake. Since that time a number of smaller influenza pandemics and many geographically limited epidemics have occurred, but none has had such disastrous effects. A number of research groups are now studying the genetic material of the 1918 influenza viruses in the hope of finding out why that particular outbreak of influenza was so devastating and thus how similar catastrophes might be avoided in the future.

Wonder when this amazing picture was from It was used to illustrate the text above on a website. Quite creepy!
