The pandemic of 1918-19 claimed at least 30 million human lives

Spanish flu made its way around the world in three waves in 1918-19, leaving at least 30 million deaths and massive social and economic dislocation in its wake. Since that time a number of smaller influenza pandemics and many geographically limited epidemics have occurred, but none has had such disastrous effects. A number of research groups are now studying the genetic material of the 1918 influenza viruses in the hope of finding out why that particular outbreak of influenza was so devastating and thus how similar catastrophes might be avoided in the future.
