Eleven Killed After Fire Engulfs Building in Manila's Chinatown
For now, I can only find two death aftermath photos. Maybe other users here have access to more. In the Binondo district of Manila, Philippines - often described as the Filipino capital's Chinatown - a fire engulfed a five-storey residential and commercial building after a gas tank exploded at an eatery on the building's ground floor. The fire was put out less than two hours after firemen arrived at the scene, but six bodies were found on the mezzanine floor and five others on the second floor. The windows were fitted with iron grills, preventing the victims from escaping. The fire is Metro Manila's deadliest since 2015, when 74 workers were killed in a blaze at a slipper factory. So far, as far as I'm aware, five of the eleven deceased have been publicly identified. They are (in order of antemortems seen below): Shania N.A., 24 Maria S.J.H., 29 Ivy M.R., 24 PCG Mark H., age undisclosed PCG Ian P.F., 28 |

"The windows were fitted with iron grills, preventing the victims from escaping." Brilliant. Why even build windows?

Re: Eleven Killed After Fire Engulfs Building in Manila's Chinatown
My Country's Local News A fire broke out in a building in Chinatown in the Philippine capital early Friday, killing 11 people, authorities said. It took crews from 14 fire trucks two hours to control the blaze in Manila's Binondo district, after firefighters were alerted around 7:30 a.m. (2300 GMT), the city's fire bureau said in a preliminary report. An elected official for the community where the fire occurred, Newlson Ty, told radio station DZRH, that hawkers used the structure to store their goods at night. "The building owner's wife is among those who died and so far it is not clear whether more people are trapped and feared dead," he said. Rescuers reported finding 11 bodies inside the five-story multi-purpose building, he added. The cause of the fire and the identity of the victim are unknown at the moment while several cars are seen waiting on the side of the road, reported an AFP reporter. The burning building houses shops on the ground floor and residential units on the upper floors. The Philippines has a poor record in enforcing fire safety in buildings, homes and offices. Last August, 16 people died in a fire in a residential building and a warehouse while a major fire broke out in the capital's historic Central Post Office building in May 2023. In 2017, a fire in a shopping mall in southern Davao City killed 37 call center workers and a security officer. Source https://www.bharian.com.my/dunia/ase...atown-filipina |

Those were installed to deter robbery. Not sure if that's the thing on other countries.

In Arizona, any grilled window has to have releases so it can be pushed out when it is released, and drop to the ground. I don't even think you can buy a non-releasable grill screen here.

In the US building codes require an egress for escaping burning structures. Bars on the window or not egress is mandatory.
