The dismembered corpse of a 19-year-old woman, Mercedes A.S.Q., was found in a vacant lot on the 13th, a week after she had been last seen alive.

The lot was next to the house of a motorcycle taxi driver, Esteban C.G., who, according to the victim's family, had a trusting relationship with Mercedes and was the last person to see her alive. Mercedes had left her home on the 6th to collect sixteen soles (around USD $4.25) from Esteban.

Her mother, Angelita Q., tried repeatedly to contact her, but the young woman’s phone remained turned off.

After several days without any news, Angelita managed to track down the mototaxi driver, who had been close to the family. “He was someone we trusted, but he kept a low profile. I always told my daughters to be careful around him,” she stated.

Esteban, who had a history of domestic violence and behavioural problems, was arrested, and confessed to murdering and dismembering Mercedes, who leaves behind a two-year-old child.
