"I tell you as I've seen," said Fidele Smugomwa, former head of the extremist Hutu militia during the Rwandan genocide, in an interview with Serge Farnel, documentary filmmaker. One by one, the former genocidal filmed by Serge Farnel tell the same story, namely that, May 13, 1994, small teams of white men they describe as "French soldiers, dressed in fatigues and carried in jeeps or trucks, assembled on the hills in the hinterland of western Rwanda. They fired shots in the hills of Bisesero to flush out the Tutsis.

Then they were aimed directly men, women and children fled. When the shooting stopped, the Hutu killers invested hills. Wielding machetes, spears, nail-studded clubs, and their own guns, they finished the wounded. Twenty survivors told me an identical version of events.

That day and the next day, 40,000 Tutsis were massacred. In all, about 800,000 people - Tutsis and Hutu opponents of the genocide - died horribly this spring 1994.
