As an addendum to my post, I must add that when I was coming up in school and University, this was before the internet, and it is quite possible that these type of suicides were happening on a daily basis in other countries, but without sites such as DR, I would not ever have known about them.
And these days everyone has a phone and can post footage/info/opinions about any death and it can spark protests.
