Death Due to Accidental Air Conditioner Compressor Explosion
India. A 25-year-old AC mechanic and his assistant were repairing the compressor of a split air conditioner installed on the rooftop of a university building. Suddenly there was an explosion in the compressor, and both the persons sustained injury due to it. The mechanic died on the spot, and his assistant was admitted to a nearby hospital with burn injuries. Four laboratory assistants of the university, who were in the building at the time of the blast, suffered glass splinter injuries. At the blast scene, the entire AC unit was found completely pulverized and parts of it were lying scattered, along with the body of the mechanic. Fig.1 Scene of the compressor blast site. Fig.2 The victim at the scene. The deceased was of average build. Multiple foreign bodies (parts of the compressor) were recovered from the wound and multiple reddish contused abrasions over the left chest and over right forearm and hand. Amputation of left forearm was present at the junction of lower 1/3rd and upper 2/3rd with irregular, contused margin associated with charring of surrounding tissues and singeing of hairs. The dismembered part was present along with the body. The margin of the dismembered part was irregular and contused with burning and charring of adjacent tissues. Fig.5 Dismembered left hand. Internal examination revealed multiple contusions on the posterior surface of both lungs. A laceration of size 3 × 3 cm, parenchyma deep was present over the right lobe of the liver on the antero-inferior surface. Re: Death Due to Accidental Air Conditioner Compressor Explosion
I suspect the freon was serviced sometime in the past with propane, hexane, or natural gas. There are a lot of "Quick-Cool" kits that use this to rejuvenate auto air conditioners. People don't realize they are making their air conditioner into an explosive bomb. These guys were probably set up by some prior worker doing a crap job. When they started working on the system, it detonated. |
