Maniac stabs girl to death at Gateway
TNN Aug 14, 2005, 08.31am IST

MUMBAI: A seemingly mentally disturbed man stabbed two young girls from Manipur at the Gateway of India on Saturday at about 5:45 pm, killing one of them.

The women, who had been on a steamer ride earlier, were standing near the sea wall feeding pigeons when the man came up from the rear, pulled out a chopper from his belt and grabbed one of them by the hair. Pulling her head back, he repeatedly stabbed her in the neck. The other girl, who was about 15 feet away, was slashed on her forehead near her eye as she ran to help her friend, shouting in fear.

The girl who died in the attack was identified as Leisha Choan (23) and the one who survived was Ngakuim Raony (20). Raony worked at a suburban five-star hotel. The girls, residents of Kalina, had come sightseeing. The stabbing took place just behind the car park.

At the time of the attack, there were policemen on duty at the Taj Hotel where a politician was holding a meeting. Police sub-inspector Tanaji Bhosale rushed to the spot with head constable Namdeo Ardvekar. When Bhosale saw the assailant with a blood-stained chopper in his hand, he shouted to Ardvekar to strike him with his lathi. Once the chopper fell from his hand the man was nabbed.

Sharad Verma, was witness to the incident. "I saw the girls feeding pigeons when a man approached them from behind and attacked them," he said. Chandrakant Dalvi, a daily wage labourer who was just behind the girls, added, "The girls bought some chana and were feeding the pigeons. They clicked a few pictures of the Gateway but did not seem happy with the results. One of the professional photographers in the vicinity approached them and was showing them his album when the assailant, who was standing nearby, attacked them. A crowd gathered but everyone was scared.

The photographer shouted for help as the assailant started walking away from the scene and, as it happened, ran into a police jeep," said Dalvi, his shirt splattered with blood.

Deputy commissioner of police Naval Bajaj said the attacker was 27-year-old Uzer Patel, a Mumbai resident, who used to work as a turner fitter but is unemployed at present. Youth stabbed his father 12 times

He said he had studied up to Std VI. He told the police he was suffering from depression. On Saturday morning, he stabbed his father 12 times. Ninety minutes after the Gateway incident, many tourists seemed unaware of what had happened and some even stepped on the puddle of blood on the cobblestones. The police had not cordoned off the area.

The blood stains were partially covered with two polythene sheets. Joint police commissioner (law and order) Arun Patnaik said, "It is very unfortunate that the attack took place but we are lucky to have nabbed the assailant in time.
