It was done mainly for peace of mind. People didn't like the idea of death photos of loved ones in a casket, so instead they decided to give them a "lively" looking pose. Also some people wanted a last picture of the deceased doing things that they did in life.

Blow up the second picture; there's a support visible behind the girl's left foot. Also, her feet aren't flat on the floor.
