It was done mainly for peace of mind. People didn't like the idea of death photos of loved ones in a casket, so instead they decided to give them a "lively" looking pose. Also some people wanted a last picture of the deceased doing things that they did in life.

I remember what your talking about, the thread is called "man stood up at his wake". He is propped up in a corner, with his coffin in front of him. very creepy. Sorry dont know how to post the link.
