The body of Cristina Guzmán Martínez, 20, was found at dawn on April 7, 2018, on a dirt track in the Ciudad Olmeca area of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. She was naked except for a gold bracelet on her left wrist, and industrial tape had been wrapped around her head and face. Residents alerted emergency services, and police and forensic personnel secured the area and removed the body.

Guzmán was initially unidentified. Her body remained unclaimed in the morgue for several days and was close to being placed in a common grave before her family claimed it. She was identified on April 13. She left one child. Authorities did not publicly establish her cause of death or determine whether organized crime was involved.
